Short answer: harder than most applicants expect, easier than most fear — and “how hard is it” is the wrong question anyway.
The UA aptitude battery, administered by GAN Human Resources for most United Association locals, is not a knowledge test. There is nothing to memorise about pipe, no code to study, no trade experience assumed. It is a timed test of arithmetic, reading, pattern recognition and spatial reasoning, and the thing that makes it hard is not the content. It is the clock and the missing calculator.
Six timed sections, roughly 140 questions, about two hours, no calculator on any of it:

Look at the pacing column rather than the question counts. Reading gives you about 36 seconds per question including the time you spend reading the passage. That is the honest source of the difficulty — not any single question being clever.
Almost everyone taking this test does arithmetic on a phone every day and has for years. Being good at math and being fast at arithmetic by hand are different skills, and only the second one is being measured.
This is good news, because it is the most fixable kind of difficulty. Twenty minutes a day of no-calculator fraction and decimal work for two weeks moves scores more than any other single thing you can do.
Ask applicants which section worries them and most will say Paper Folding. It is unfamiliar, it feels like a puzzle, and there is no obvious way to study it. But it is only 12 questions, and it is the single most trainable section on the battery — work backwards one fold at a time, count layers to predict the hole count, and fold real paper for a week. The fear fades fast.
The points quietly leak somewhere else: the last five reading questions nobody reaches, and the arithmetic answered slightly wrong at speed.
If you sat it cold tomorrow with no preparation, you would probably find it uncomfortable but not impossible, and you would likely land somewhere around or below the qualifying line. If you spend three to four weeks rebuilding arithmetic fluency, practising under a timer, and sitting two or three full-length batteries, you should clear the bar with room.
But clearing the bar is not the goal. The applicants who get called are the ones near the top of the ranked list, and the distance between “qualified” and “called” is exactly the distance you close with preparation.
Always confirm the details with your local. Most UA locals use the GAN battery, but assessments and cutoffs vary, and the local’s own applicant instructions are the authority.
Moderately difficult, and almost entirely a test of arithmetic speed without a calculator. Most applicants who rebuild fraction and decimal fluency over three to four weeks clear the qualifying bar comfortably. The harder problem is not passing — it is scoring high enough to rank near the top of the list, because most locals fill seats from the top score down.
Around 70% is a common qualifying minimum, and some fitter locals set it higher. But qualifying only puts you on the eligibility list. Your score usually becomes your ranking number, so the practical target is as far above the minimum as you can get.
Two to four weeks of daily practice is the realistic minimum for a meaningful score change. If your fraction and decimal skills are years out of use, give yourself six to eight weeks. Twenty focused minutes a day beats two hours once a week.
Applicants usually name Paper Folding, because it is unfamiliar rather than genuinely difficult — and it is the most trainable section on the battery. The section that actually costs the most points is the arithmetic, because Numerical Computation and Problem Solving together are 63 of roughly 140 questions and none of them allow a calculator.
